ATTLESEY, George James Palmer

No.5784536, Private, George James Palmer ATTLESEY
Aged 20

8th/30th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment
Died on Saturday, 1st July 1944

George James Palmer Attlesey was born in Soham in 1923 (Newmarket Q3-1923 3B:782), son of Harriet ATTLESEY. His mother married George Elliott PALMER (Newmarket Q4-1932 3B:1366).

In the 1939 register, at 132 Downfields, Soham were his father George Elliott PALMER [21-12-1887] a general labourer and his mother Harriet [13-8-1894]. There are three closed records.

The 8th Battalion was renumbered as the 30th Battalion, served for a short time in North Africa and then used for garrison duties in Italy during which the 43rd Infantry Brigade, which included 30th Somersets and 30th Dorsets, was made to appear as a full division for deception purposes..George was the only one of the battalion to die that day.

His medals are a surmise based on the battalion's service in North Africa and Italy. Not able to find whether they were 1st or 7th Army in N Africa.
